Yenikap?- Laleli is notable for the ongoing excavations on its Byzantine port discovered in 2004 and which became one of the largest investigations in Europe by the size and the number of the shipwrecks found since the initial discovery. The commercial harbor, in use between the 5th and the 10th centuries, was, as such, an alternative to Constantinople's traditional berths situated along the inlet of the Golden Horn.
