?Those who have not been to Ribe and stayed at the ?Hotel Dagmar? - nor heard the quarterly chimes from the Cathedral - have not experienced Denmark.? These are the words of the famous Danish journalist and author, Andreas Vinding. And people very much agree with him. Hotel Dagmar was built in 1581 and is the oldest hotel in Denmark. There are 50 charming double rooms. Through the years restoration has been carried out with care and respect for the old hotel and its surroundings. The textiles are all in warm and golden colours, and the walls are decorated with real paintings.The majority has low ceilings, windows with deep sills and sloping floors. The rooms are different in size and they are arranged individually. Also on offer are two restaurants of completely different styles and atmospheres, and outdoor restaurants in the summer. |

| If you wish to make closer acquaintance with Denmark's oldest town, it is a good idea to follow the watchman when on summer evenings he makes his traditional rounds through the old streets. Hear him sing the watchman's song, written by Danish hymn writerThomas Kingo; listen to him telling the dramatic history of the town, and his entertaining remarks about many of the interesting things you will see.The watchman is dressed in traditional uniform and carries a lamp and morning star, a wooden staff with iron spikes on the top. On a chain around his neck he carries the initials of the regent. The tour begins on Torvet (market place) |
