Vicenza is one of the oldest cities of Veneto, although its history prior to the Roman rule is shrouded in mystery: it was probably founded by the Euganeans (a neolithic Italic people), and remained the territory of the Gauls until 157 B. C. It was annexed to the Roman territory and called Vicetia or Vincentia where it flourished under the Lombards and then under the Franks. Under the episcopal principality (nomination of 1001), it waged various wars on neighbouring towns, falling under the Venetian Republic in 1404. The Renaissance saw Vicenza as one of the architectural capitals of the world, above all for the works by Andrea Palladio. The city came under Austrian rule from 1813 to 1848 when it arose again, with the memorable resistance of the people at Monte Berico. It was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
