Located in the northwest on the Atlantic Ocean/ El Ferrol has been an important naval base since the 18th century. Once a quiet fishing village/ Ferrol is now a city of stark contrasts - the old town with its long winding streets and sailors houses and the new town with its carefully planned infrastructure. Being a prominent naval base/ El Ferrol has always been well defended by massive fortifications. Today/ these fortifications afford great views out over the sea and one of the largest docks in the world. The city has a strong neo-classical feel with plenty of architecturally rich monuments. Meandering along the streets of Magdalena district/ youll see some of the finest examples of 18th century architecture including modernist buildings sporting forged iron balconies and glass and wood galleries. El Ferrol comes alive during the Easter week celebrations but theres plenty to see and do here if you come at other times of the year. For example/ Ferrol is a good place to practice nautical sports like windsurfing and canoeing. The Ria estuary is also worth a detour with its teeming marine life. The Basilica and a church behind the citys parador are interesting architectural features. Ferrol has an impressive bay and port along with some good beaches including those of San Jorge/ Cabanas and Cobas. It also has the Castillo de San Felipe coastal fort at the opening to the bay which tourists can visit. This fort is similar to/ but significantly larger than/ the one at Santa Cruz a little further down the coast. A further castle in the Ferrol district is the Castillo de Nogueirosa.
