Falun actually attracted several of the first tourists to Sweden. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Falun mine was one of the worlds largest copper mines and one of Swedens largest workplaces. In those days, Falun was also the second largest town in Sweden after Stockholm. In 2001 UNESCO declared the mine and the historical industrial landscape with the mining environment around Falun a World Heritage Site. But there are many other reasons to visit Falun. Today Falun offers a rich and vibrant cultural life, particularly at the Dala Theatre and the Dalarna Museum. Go for walks and bicycle tours, or skiing and skating in the winter. Lakes Varpan, Runn and Tisken, which surround the town, give Falun the feel of a real lake city with numerous opportunities for swimming and boating Falun is surrounded by nature and large forests.
