Pochayiv is a small city in the Ternopil region, away from major highways and cities. Despite this, Pochayiv is one of the most visited places in Ukraine. Thousands of pilgrims come here to worship the miraculous image of Our Lady of Pocahyiv in the Holy Dormition Pochayiva Lavra, the second most important Orthodox monastery in Ukraine after Kiev Pechersk Lavra. According to one of the versions, the name of the city comes from the river Pochaina, in which Vladmir the Great baptized the people of Kiev in year 988. Another version suggests that the name come from the abbreviated Ukrainian phrase 'Pocha Diva Tvoriti Chudesa' ('The Virgin began performing miracles'). Yet another version suggests that the name comes from the word 'Pochatok' ('beginning') - the beginning of wonders and miracles that took place here. A picturesque spot in the north of the Ternopil region, Pochayiv attracts the attention of more and more tourists from all over the World.
