Sacramento is home to the annual California State Fair, the Capital Building and Museum and a thriving arts and cultural scene. This former gold rush city is also an anomaly in California with its streets of Victorian style homes shaded by stately elms and oaks. Walk down the Sacramento waterfront to find boutique shops and art galleries. The 28-acre National Historic Landmark District and State Historic Park located along the Sacramento River in Old Sacramento provides entertainment for an entire weeklong trip. There are many historical sites, as well as more than 100 shops and boutiques. Other exceptional shopping areas include the Downtown Plaza and K Street Mall. You will find street entertainers and restaurants in all of these historic quarters and retail districts, as well as a vibrant nightlife. Make sure to visit the State Indian Museum and Railroad Museum. The California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts offers a unique perspective into the states history, and the Crocker Art Museum is the oldest art museum west of the Mississippi. Theater venues are abundant in Sacramento including the Community Center Theatre and Memorial Auditorium, both of which are part of the Sacramento Convention Center Complex. The Wells Fargo Pavilion is another terrific venue for all sorts of performances. Or if you want to see a performance by the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera or Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, youll enjoy visiting the Community Center Theatre in the convention center. And if youre here in the summer, make sure to check out the Sacramento Shakespeare Festival in William Land Park. You can explore the gold country by driving along scenic Highway 49 where you can still see reminders of the gold rush days as the highway winds through some of the old Mother Lode mining towns. You can make this your base camp as you visit the mountains one day, the beaches the next day, and the nearby wine country of Napa and Sonoma Counties on yet another.
