Located in the northeastern corner of Florida, Jacksonville is a beautiful, modern city with some of the oldest historical sites in North America.Located along the banks of the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville has a long history as an important center for commerce and, more recently, tourism. The largest city in Florida, Jacksonville also has the largest deep-water port in the South. Major companies like CSX Corporation, Fidelity National Financial and Landstar Systems call it home. Just an hour south of downtown Jacksonville is St Augustine, where, in 1513, Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon came ashore to search for the Fountain of Youth. Today, tourists who frequent this location often start their visit at Castillo de San Marcos. Originally built to defend Spanish interests in the New World, the Castillo is actually made of compressed seashells and was never defeated in battle. While here, visitors are encouraged to take a few hours to tour other St. Augustine attractions. In Jacksonvilles northeast corner is the Timucuan Preserve, a national treasure that includes Fort Caroline and the Kingsley Plantation. Here visitors can experience both history and nature as they wander among one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands along the Atlantic. Within the park, Fort Caroline is one of the few remnants of the brief French presence in Florida. Timucuan Preserve is also home to Kingsley Plantation, where visitors can see firsthand what life was like in 18th Century Florida. Covering many fascinating topics, the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History should be on your vacation itinerary. If you would rather play sports than watch, you might be a golfer. Jacksonville offers a tremendous number of quality golf courses, like the Arnold Palmer designed Mill Cove Golf Club. This 18-hole championship course is a breathtaking setting for golfers of any ability.
