Named for the southernmost turn of the St. Joseph River, South Bend is the fourth largest city in Indiana. South Bend is most famous as the home of the University of Notre Dame. Founded as a male-only Roman Catholic university in 1842, Norte Dame today serves nearly 12,000 graduate and undergraduate students, 47% of whom are women. The prestigious university ranked number five on the Princeton Reviews 2008 list of ?dream schools?, as ranked by parents of prospective students. In addition to being a world-class research university, Notre Dame is also known for its sports programs. The Fighting Irish, as the universitys athletic program is known, have produced many highly successful teams, especially in football. Many of Notre Dames greatest players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, a facility also located in South Bend, just south of the Notre Dame campus. A major employer in the South Bend area is AM General, maker of military and commercial trucks. The companys manufacturing plant is less than five miles from either of the Extended Stay Hotels locations. Other significant businesses in the South Bend area include Honeywell, Bosch, Woodwind and Brasswind and PEI Genesis. One of the early greats in the field of automobile manufacturing, Studebaker, remains well-known even after its financial collapse in the 1950s. Since the company was headquartered in South Bend, it is natural that the Studebaker National Museum is located here. There is also plenty to do for visitors who enjoy the outdoors. In 1984, South Bend made history by turning the abandoned East Race canal on the St. Joseph River into the East Race Waterway, a modern playground for canoeing, kayaking and rafting. All equipment can be rented on site for both novices and seasoned white water enthusiasts alike.
