If you ever visit Kentucky, you simply have to make a trip to Louisville. As the largest city in the Bluegrass State, Louisville is a traditional southern metropolis that is filled with modern attractions. The city is most well known for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Derby is the first race of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, and attracts throngs of visitors every spring, usually on the first Saturday in May. Spring is a magical time, flowers are blooming and the Derby is well under way. The race is emblematic of the convergence of old and new values in this city. Louisville is made great by its bustling downtown business district south of the Ohio River and the contrasting, serene neighborhood of Old Louisville. This historic district of the city is home to remarkable preservations from the Victorian era, and is the largest historically preserved neighborhood of its nature anywhere in the nation. There is much to explore here any time of year, though; not just in the springtime. Every year, the two-week long Kentucky Derby Festival precedes the famous horse race for which it is named. One of the festivals most exciting events is called the Thunder Over Louisville, which is the largest annual firework spectacle in the nation. Another unique attraction is the Adam Matthews Balloon Festival, one of the largest hot air balloon gatherings of its kind in the country that returns to the city every September. And all you baseball enthusiasts out there cant afford to pass up the Louisville Slugger Museum. For those looking to indulge their cultural side, the Louisville Ballet or Orchestra and the Kentucky Opera are all great options to that end. And if youre looking for fascinating history, there is no shortage of that here. The Seelbach Hotel, which F. Scott Fitzgerald references in The Great Gatsby, is famous for a secret back room where Al Capone would meet with his cohorts and make deals during Prohibition.
