Named for the nations first Secretary of War, Henry Knox, Knoxville is the third largest city in Tennessee. Situated along the Tennessee River near the Great Smokey Mountains, Knoxville is home to the primary campus of the University of Tennessee. Established in 1794, UT, as it is also known, serves nearly 28,000 graduate and undergraduate students. The university also hosts the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, among the largest government laboratories in the country. As home to one of the worlds most powerful supercomputers, Oak Ridge Laboratory is frequently called upon to assist with international research on advanced materials development. Beyond its stellar reputation for academics, the University of Tennessee has an outstanding athletics program. Tapping into a spirit of volunteerism dating to the American Revolution, the UT teams have taken the name Volunteers. Sports fans visiting Knoxville during football season should take in a UT home game at Neyland Stadium, one of the largest collegiate stadiums in the nation. No matter what your favorite sport may be, the UT mens athletic program and the ?Lady Vols,? as the women like to be called, always deliver for the fans. Sports has opened doors to higher education for millions of people, and womens basketball has played an important role in this process. Honoring the best of this sport is the Womens Basketball Hall of Fame in downtown Knoxville. While you are in the downtown area, consider a visit to the Knoxville Museum of Art, or KMA. Within a short drive of Knoxville is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, this area is ideal for a day of hiking, mountain biking or just relaxing in nature. With any luck, you may even see one of the parks black bears. Knoxville has a rich music history and has been a major contributor to genres like bluegrass and country music.
