Memphis, the largest city in the state of Tennessee, is known for many things. It is the home of Elvis Presley, who will forever be known as the King of Rock and Roll, and his mansion Graceland that sees scores of visitors year-round. Memphis is one of the biggest southeastern cities and is mentioned in countless songs by artists ranging from Chuck Berry to Paul Simon. Known for some of the worlds best barbeque and a lively music scene that has been thriving since the early days of country, blues and rock, the spirit of this city seems to have a life of its own. There are numerous activities awaiting tourists in Memphis. Most visitors make their way to Graceland, particularly for the anniversary of Elviss death every January, but Graceland only scratches the surface of what this city has to offer. There is the Memphis Walk of Fame on Beale Street, which celebrates the citys blues musicians and composers such as B.B. King and Aretha Franklin, just like the Hollywood Walk of Fame celebrates famous actors. Make time to stop by the clubs and bars along Beale Street that have helped carve out Memphis reputation as a city full of music and nightlife. Another well-known attraction is the Civil Rights Museum, located at the Lorraine Motel. This is the location where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, providing an ideal opportunity to reflect upon and to educate young people about our history. Memphis also has a ton to offer sports lovers. The beloved Redbirds baseball team plays at AutoZone Park, which is a great way to soak up the local culture. The city hosts state baseball tournaments and footballs Liberty Bowl and often plays host for games during March Madness at the University of Memphis. Memphis is full of colleges and universities, making it a true college town.
